Glenfiddich Distillery

This weekend was one of the few weekends that Ram was in town and we had no social obligations.  Though I'm grateful we have a busy social calender in the 'Deen, part of me was thankful to have a weekend with Ram all to myself:)  What better way than to take the edge off after a long work week than go to a whiskey distillery??? ROAD TRIP!

Concentrating...
We decided to check out the Glenfiddich distillery since it's only 1.5 hours away.  (Though Ram's favorite whiskey is Glenmorangie, it's 3 hours away and we decided to save that for another weekend when we can spend the night.)  So Saturday morning we braved the open road.  This was the first time Ram and I drove out of the city by ourselves.  The route looked simple enough, we only had to cross through about 10 round-a-bouts to get out of Aberdeen and then we would be on the "freeway" where you can drive 70 mph in a normal sized lane.  The drive up there was scenic with all the farm animals and beautiful hills as the backdrop.

After being stuck behind several trucks (there are rarely overtaking lanes) and some curvy, seat gripping roads, we arrived in Dufftown, the land of Scotch.  The last 15 minutes of our drive made us really happy to be near alcohol at this point!

For those of you that don't know, Glen is the term used for Valley here and Fiddich is the name of the River near the distillery, hence the name Glen Fiddich.
Excitedly, we went on an hour long tour where they showed us all the phases they use to create their single malt whiskey.  Here's another interesting fact, in Scotland, if the whiskey is not at least 3 years old, it's not considered whiskey (and cannot be sold).  It was a pretty neat experience to see how much work is involved and how long it takes to make the whiskey.  Made me really appreciate it even more and now I understand why you really shouldn't spoil the whiskey with soda!  As we were tasting the different aged whiskies, our tour guide pointed out how just a single drop or two of water can enhance the flavor.  I was surprised what a difference a drop of water made!

Working on the barley. These are 5m tall!

The heating phase...it was hot in here!

AHHHH

After quenching our thirst, we headed out into Dufftown to grab a bite to eat.  We ended up at a restaurant called Taste of Speyside.  They even had some interesting beers! We however didn't try any:( Next time!
